“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” – Walt Disney
I used to think that if something was important enough, I’d remember to do it. With an ever increasing number of distractions – it turns out that trying to remember everything just means most things get put off for later. Making a list means you don’t have to spend time and energy remembering- you can simply do and cross it off.
Procrastination is often a result of knowing the task you must accomplish is going to suck. The longer you put it off, the guiltier you feel. Unfortunately, putting off the inevitable does not make it go away. Trust me, I’ve tried. Giving yourself a reward for accomplishing a dreaded task can be a great motivator. Pick something you actually care about when bribing yourself, whether it is a social media break or a quick trip to Starbucks.
Make sure your day has a mix of things you love to do in addition to those tasks you aren’t so crazy about. Mix them up if you can, so you never get too bogged down. That said, if you can finish something completely today by digging in, do it. Even if it takes a little bit longer. Even if you are over it. Finish it- and be done. It is one less thing that will carry over to tomorrow.
